Meet Van Allen - Owner of The Hire Connection

Van_1128CollarCSq

Meet Van Allen

Born in Orange, TX, Van grew up in Lake Charles, LA. Van made a few stops before graduating from Southwestern University in Waxahachie, TX. After chasing his music dream in Nashville, TN, he moved to Dallas, TX and tripped into the physician recruiting business. Van considers himself the luckiest person in the world because he found something he loved at a young age and he has never looked back. After working for the largest physician recruiting company in the country, he moved to Columbia, MO and opened his own firm. He sold that company in 2006 and then came back into the arena he loves and knows so well and opened his latest venture, The Hire Connection.

We put some questions to Van and here are his answers!

1) Where did you grow up?

Born in Orange, TX but grew up most of my life in Lake Charles, LA. My mom and dad who are still married after 55 years met in Lake Charles and that is where we spent most of of our life.

2) Why did you get into the medical recruiting business?

I answered an ad in the Dallas Morning Newspaper. The business seemed interesting, fast paced, steep learning curve and I worked with a great group of guys who made my initial foray into the physician recruiting world a lot of fun.

3) What is your favorite type of music?

Any kind of country. New and Old. And then there are some obscure artists that I just love like David Wilcox.

4) Who is your family?

I am married to Julie. We have been married for 15 years and we have an awesome daughter, Reagan. Reg is very involved in competition dance which keeps her and her mother pretty busy.

5) What is your favorite sport to follow and who is your favorite team?

My favorite sport is baseball and I love the Texas Rangers but I am also and avid Dallas Cowboy fan.

6) What movie did you last see that you liked?

The last movie I saw at the movie theater was Jaws. That pretty much sums of my passion for movies. There are a lot of things I would much rather do than sit in a chair for 3 hours.

7) What is your biggest pet peeve?

Tardiness.

8) What do you like to do when you relax?

I don't relax a lot but my favorite past time would be playing golf.

9) What do you like most about living in Missouri

I love everything about MO. I love the four seasons even when it's extreme. I love the lake. It's my favorite place. We have two seasons and both are great. We have the high energy tourism season and then we have the locals quiet season. They are both great.

10) What is the best thing you like most about medical recruiting?

I love the pace of the work and I love the problem solving component of this line of work. You have to be able to think very quick on your feet, you have to be able to juggle a lot of balls at one time and we work with very high level professionals.

The Hire Connection's unique recruiting method!

Comprehensive Recruitment Services - The Hire Connection Difference

The Hire Connection offers its clients the industry's most comprehensive range of medical recruitment services.  We couple technology, expertise and accountability to source, screen, qualify, present and place providers to satisfy recruitment goals and improve provider retention.

 Data Acquisition and Data Appending

THC invests heavily in data and bolsters that data via an extensive appending process.  Quality data is the foundation for an effective marketing campaign.  While many agencies advertise using limited candidate contact points in order to save money, THC aggressively pursues added contact points to ensure your message is broadcast in a wide variety of mediums.

Unique "800" Numbers

THC assigns unique toll-free numbers to every opportunity we represent.  Outside of capturing 100% of candidate responses (even when candidate does not leave a message), THC tracking systems verify response rate and ensures candidate response is routed to the appropriate search consultant.

Candidate Sourcing

THC uses a wide variety of advertising mediums to drive candidates to your opportunity.  Built into your guaranteed investment, THC proactively "casts a broad net" to peak candidate attention and elicit a timely response.

Our Sourcing Tools include:

  • Designated Recruiter
  • Internal Database
  • Home Mailer
  • Office Mailer
  • Email Marketing
  • Landing page
  • Text Messaging
  • Voice Blast
  • Cold Calling
  • Residency Programs
  • Fellowship Programs
  • Industry Job Boards
  • Society Lists
  • Industry Journals
  • Provider Referral
  • Job Fairs
  • Fax Campaigns
  • Social Media
  • ...and MORE

Candidate Screening

THC will save your organization time, money and aggravation by carefully screening each candidate to ensure they meet or exceed your specific criteria.  In addition to securing candidates' CV/resume, your recruiter will go to great lengths to understand the professional and personal background of each candidate.  Along with candidate screening, your designated recruiter will learn about the entire family's needs, wants and interests.

THC provides the client with a detailed cover letter (narrative) that overviews both the candidate and their family.  THC provides its clients with the information they need and want to make the best possible selection and maximize time with the candidate and their family.

Background Check

THC conducts a thorough background check on each submitted candidate which consists of:

  • Licensure and Credentials
  • Board Eligibility & Certification
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Financial Background Check
  • 4-6 Professional References

Pre-Close

Each candidate is asked a series of pre-closing questions to determine the candidate's interest level and availability for relocation.  This information is communicated to the client prior to a site visit or interview.

Candidate Phone Interview and Site Visit

THC can be as involved as you desire with candidate negotiations.  THC understands this can be a critical time in the recruitment process and works closely with its client to ensure a positive outcome!

Mentoring your new Resident!

The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves. ~ Steven Spielberg

So you’ve invested heavily into this complete unproven, unknown, resident, because you believe he/she is not only what the community has been looking for but is also the person that can take your hospital to the next level.  This is the person that can jumpstart the program and hopefully at some point in time run the program.

The biggest complaint among CEO’s and practice administrators is that young physicians, though they possess the skill sets to be a great physician they don’t see the big picture and don’t develop from a business standpoint quickly enough...at least from the vantage point of the person signing the checks.  This resident/fellow has lived in the very protected environment called academia, being trained by some of the world’s greatest physicians but what they lack is real world experience from a business standpoint.

Providing optimal care to the patient will always be the physicians primary responsibility but the physician that accepts and acknowledges healthcare is a business and is consumed with the numbers as much as the person signing the check will always be a highly coveted physician.   The problem with this make believe scenario is they only way a physician learns the other side of medicine is by having mentors who coach and guide them.  Good mentors will explain things like how to maximize their talents, time, and resources to justify their personal compensation and expenses or how to read and diagnose a P&L statement and not only understand the statement but how to improve on it.

Ideas for being a Great Mentor!

Be committed

If you are not committed to your role as a mentor, your mentee will figure it out soon. If you show true commitment to both the time spent and to your preparation, you should be successful.

Listen

It is easy to talk about your background and experiences, but one way communication is not the way to go.  Listen, learn and connect with your mentee and find out what is important to them.

Have your own mentor(s) and network

Having a mentor or two will be a valuable experience as you become a mentor yourself.  You will learn what works effectively for you and can translate this into your own mentor style.  Cultivate as many networks yourself, and bring those opportunities to your mentee.

Be open-minded and empathetic

Empathy is one of the most effective tools you have when mentoring.  If you can try to understand what your mentee is feeling and the motivations behind their actions, then you can understand how to talk most effectively to them.  Remember, you may not have all the answers!

Have patience

Losing patience with your mentee is the quickest way to lose credibility and trust.  You were a young resident once, so draw from those memories.

Be a role model

If you are not walking your talk, you will not be successful as a mentor.  Being a mentor means that you are going to be under the microscope both on and off work.

The HTC Culture - Get JizzleWizzle with it!

How do you define culture? Maybe from a medical standpoint? Like having a positive culture means you’re in for a round of antibiotics? Or perhaps you see it as more personal – the lump sum of someone’s heritage, values and customs.

Jizzlewizzle Culture

Well at THC, we define culture a bit differently. In fact, to give it a little pizzazz, we like to add an adjective as well. The result is JizzleWizzle Culture, a term we believe says volumes about who we are and how we do business.

Weird-sounding?

Yes, we know. But, JizzleWizzle is our no-secret-hand-shake, code name for the simple, no-nonsense work environment that makes us the number one place to work at the lake. JizzleWizzle means no ties (unless seeing a client or prospect); no suits, no dress shoes, and heaven forbid no cuff links allowed in the THC “temple” folks. It’s our way of saying “The clothes don’t make the man, the man makes the clothes”, period.

We let you do your job, we don’t babysit

JizzleWizzle in a nutshell is our THC attitude. We don’t micromanage or babysit anyone, and nobody punches a time clock. We believe in providing tools, resources and the training to be successful, and then letting everyone do their job.

Of course, we expect a full day’s work, Monday through Friday, with arrival around 7:30a.m. (no later than 8 a.m.), and then ending the day around 6pm.

Maybe JizzleWizzle is not for everyone. But that’s okay; we’re kind of picky anyway.

But if this kind of culture appeals to you, by all means, contact us.

Get JizzleWizzle wit it!

The Hire Connection at the Beautiful Lake of the Ozarks

A Little History

The Hire Connection team lives and works in one of the most beautiful and exciting places in the entire country!  A hidden gem in the Midwest, the Lake of the Ozarks offers something for everyone.  The lake stretches 92 miles in length and we have more shoreline than the State of California!  The serpentine shape of the lake has earned it the nickname of "Magic Dragon".

The lake was created by the construction of the 2,543-foot (775 m) long Bagnell Dam by Union Electric Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The principal engineering firm was Stone and Webster. Construction began August 8th, 1929, and was completed in April 1931. The dam is operated and maintained by Ameren Missouri, the successor of Union Electric, under the authority of a permit issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The Lake of the Ozarks measures more than 90 miles (140 km) in length and has several tributaries supplying it. In total, it has over 1,100 miles (1,800 km) of shoreline in four different Missouri counties. The massive body of water backed up behind Bagnell Dam is the second largest man-made lake in Missouri.

What's going on at the Lake

With the huge amount of shoreline, pristine coves, and beaches, the lake is the center of the Midwest for water activities.  We have marinas, waterfront restaurants, gas docks, and on any given day, you can see about any type of boat from kayaks to 70+ foot cruisers.  Throughout the year, the Lake of the Ozarks is the center of the universe for world class fishing tournaments and boat events.  The racing events range from PWC and Canoe racing to the big boy racing events like the Off Shore Series racing and "The Shootout" to see who has the best "Go Fast" boat in the country.
Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri makes Boating Magazine's "Five Great Cities to Dock and Dine".

The Lake of the Ozarks also boasts some of the best golfing in the area with a golf trail of 13+ top notch golf courses.  The Club at Porto Cima is a Jack Nicholas design that consistently ranks in the top golf courses in the USA.  The restaurant and nightlife scene at the Lake always is hopping with a huge variety of menus, events, and live music.  If shopping is your thing, then our outlet malls and other large retails stores can get you great bargains or the newest toy or fashion.

The Cove, a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course, opened for play in 1971; in 1996, Golf Digest rated it as the second best public course in Missouri.

Our rolling hills and forests also have great hiking and biking.  There are several events throughout the year that attract motorcycle enthusiasts and our local rides are fantastic!

Raising your family at the Lake

In addition to the tremendous recreational activities at the Lake, we also have some of the finest schools in Missouri.  The communities that make up the lake area have low taxes, low crime, and a great family friendly atmosphere perfect for raising a family.  Our community is also very giving, and on any particular night, there is a charity function going on to help the needy in our area.  Our churches are vibrant and engaged in the area.

Interested in Living at the Lake?

If you think the Lake of the Ozarks might be a great place to live and work, The Hire Connection is always looking for GREAT people.  If you think you have what it takes to work for the most unique and dynamic medical recruiting company in the country, give us a shout or go to our website for more information.

Make your Curriculum Vitae Shine!

Assembling a Curriculum Vitae is an exercise in precision within imprecise boundaries.

It requires great precision. A physician must compose, in a few short pages, a career summary that skips nothing of substance and places events in a properly identified chronology.

Unfortunately, there's no guarantee the document you create will fit the expectations of a potential employer. What elements should be included or left out? Is it necessary to list references? What about publications or grants? No set formula, no absolute guide, no strict set of rules, exists to regulate the structure and content of the document. On the other hand, adhering to common guidelines will draw positive attention to your CV.

The following is a summary of elements most recruiters, department directors, and physicians expect a CV to contain.

It should go without saying, but for some reason the basics always bear repeating.
  • Type your CV or create it on a computer.
  • Begin with your full name, current and/or permanent address, and all contact numbers, such as phone, cell phone, pager, and fax.
  • Also include an email address.

Group your professional and educational highlights into a broad, but rational categories. For residents, the most prominent category should be Medical Education. List the name of your medical school, its location (city and state or country), your degree and year of completion. Include as much detail as possible regarding your program, and double-check all dates for accuracy-the recruiter will, and CV errors may eliminate you from consideration. The category should also include any internships, with area of specialization, facility, location, and year of completion-and the same information for residencies and fellowships.

If you are still in a program, list the date you began and the anticipated date of completion. Avoid language common to general resumes, such as "to present." Provide information regarding undergraduate degrees at the end of this category, and avoid elaboration-other than dates, major area of study, and grade point average-unless you received a degree in a field related to medicine.

Several categories require an uncomplicated accounting of, well, paperwork. For example, Certification is a simple listing of all boards and national examinations taken, with dates. Licensure includes the states in which you currently hold a license to practice medicine.

The Employment History section should begin with your current or last position and include information regarding status (staff physician, for example), the practice, admitting facilities, and the usual location and contact information. Describe, briefly, your responsibilities at each setting, both clinical and office-related. Also point out the procedures you performed. In this category, you may use the phrase "to present" when listing dates of your current position.

As in a resume, outline your employment history in reverse chronological order, listing each practice since completing medical school. If you worked on a locum tenens basis be sure to list each practice setting and the staffing firm responsible for placing you into the position, if applicable. It is important to include all positions-even those you left under less than desirable circumstances. Recruiters, again, will dig into any discrepancies they find. Limit the explanation for any career or practice changes to the cover letter, rather than the CV. You want those reviewing your material to focus their attention on the positive.

There is some debate over the importance of References. Several guides to CV writing suggest candidates add an "available upon request" line at the end of the document. We contend, however, that a CV should be succinct, but complete. If you choose to list them, select at least three and no more than six professional references, with name, title, and contact information.

Try to keep the entire compilation to three pages. If you have room, add citation information for any articles, academic awards, grants, and related accomplishments. If not, alert CV reviewers to these items with a "publications, research grants, continuing medical education, and additional information available upon request" at the end of the document.

Avoid personal information, military service (unless it applies to your medical employment record), hobbies, and other ancillary matters. Remember, this is a brief and targeted document. While your participation in a hobby such as wakeboarding may stand out to recruiters or directors flipping through dozens of CVs, it will not help direct their attention toward your professional and educational record.

Let your personality come through in the cover letter.

One more word of caution: if you've had a state medical license revokes, if you've lost privileges, suffered through malpractice suits, or had DEA numbers pulled, address the issues in the cover letter, rather than the CV. The key to a successful CV is brevity-and a compelling list of accomplishments. The cover letter allows you the space to explain any past issues or problems, and their resolution.

Finally, keep your CV completely accurate. Nothing guarantees success more than this simple rule.
