Healthcare hiring is picking up!

At The Hire Connection, we pay close attention to hiring trends in healthcare to help our clients find the perfect match for their physician opportunities.  According to the Department of Labor, healthcare hiring has picked up considerably in April 2015, shaking off the slow winter month's job growth in the industry.

Department of Labor figures:

The healthcare sector added 45,000 jobs in April beating the sluggish start of the year.  Overall, there have been 390,000 jobs added in the healthcare sector over the past year.

For the overall US economy:

  1. With 223,000 jobs added in April, private-sector employment has grown for 62 consecutive months — the longest streak on record — to the tune of 12.3 million jobs over that time.
  2. The national unemployment rate fell to 5.4 percent in April, the lowest it's been since May 2008.
  3. The unemployment rate a year ago, in April 2014, was 6.2 percent. Since that time, the labor force participation rate has held steady, which means the decline in the unemployment rate has been due to people getting jobs.
  4. Job growth last month was particularly strong in three sectors: construction, professional and business services, and education and health services.

Breaking down the numbers for Healthcare jobs:

Ambulatory health care services

Ambulatory health care services added 25,000 jobs in April. Within the industry, offices of physicians employment grew by 9,000, while employment continued to trend up in outpatient care centers (+3,000) and home health care services (+3,000).

Hospitals

Hospital employment increased by 12,000 in April. Over the past 6 months, the industry has added a total of 62,000 jobs.

Nursing and Residential Care Facilities

Nursing and residential care facilities employment increased by 8,000 in April.

Offices of Physicians

Offices of Physicians have added 9300 jobs in April, and nearly 80,000 jobs over the past year.

Outpatient care centers

Outpatient care centers have added 3400 jobs in April, and 30,000 jobs over the past year.

So What does this mean for you?

As the economy continues to recover and healthcare hiring trends upward, finding good candidates to fill your opportunities will become more difficult.  In addition, with demand being high, compensation packages need to be carefully constructed to entice the best talent to your hospital or medical facility.  The Hire Connection has the technology, experience, and talent to help you find and retain the best possible fit for your opportunities.

With our industry leading money back guarantee, what do you have to lose?

The life of a medical recruiter

The Hire Connection is a fast pace, exciting company to work for.  For the right people, a career in medical recruiting can be very rewarding and very lucrative.  We thought we would give you a little insight in the day in the life of a medical recruiter

A quick overview of healthcare recruiting careers

Healthcare recruiters help hospitals and other medical facilities find qualified candidates for opportunities.  They help market and then sell the medical opportunity to the candidate.  Each recruiter will pre-qualify the candidate based on their education, experience, credentials, and assist with the interview process.  This often entails looking at CVs and resumes and then phone interviewing the most qualified candidates on paper.

What's expected

Typically, most healthcare recruiting jobs are more than a 40 hour a week job.  Many candidates are only available during evening hours.  There can be a lot of travel as THC recruiters are expected to know the community the facility and opportunity are located in, they may visit candidates in person, and attend meetings with executives or managers.  In addition, some weekend hours may be required to attend conferences, and entertaining candidates and their families during visits, particularly if the candidate is from out of town.

A recruiter needs great phone skills, speaking skills, and must enjoy talking with people!  The recruiter will spend a good deal of time on the phone (several hours) pre-qualifying potential candidates.  As with anything, time will also be spent during the day on admin work to include reviewing CVs, emailing candidates, and checking backgrounds and references among other things.

Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task is also important.  Recruiters may be juggling several opportunities at a time and organizational skills and focus are critical.  Finally, persuasiveness and tenacity along with a great attitude is needed to help you keep going even after multiple rejections.

What can I make?

Medical recruiting salaries vary widely in healthcare recruiting.  Industry wide, salaries may range from $30,000 to $45,000 for entry level or lower level recruiters, up to mid $100,000s for experienced top producers. Therefore, the average income usually is somewhere in the middle of those extremes, in the $60,000 - $85,000 range.

At The Hire Connection we make sure you are rewarded very well for great performance.  The more you work, the more you earn.

We let you do your job, we don’t babysit

At THC, we don’t micromanage or babysit anyone, and nobody punches a time clock. We believe in providing tools, resources and the training to be successful, and then letting everyone do their job.

Of course, we expect a full day’s work, Monday through Friday, with arrival around 7:30a.m. (no later than 8 a.m.), and then ending the day around 6pm.

Sound like a good deal?

If this sound right up your alley, then give us a call and join our great team.  At THC, because our team takes great pride in providing every candidate with an amazing placement experience from start to finish, we work exceptionally hard to get the best results.

THC Online Content Marketing

The Hire Connection (THC) is known for matching qualified candidates with employers and providers. THC founder Van Allen, with over 20 years in healthcare recruiting is considered a pioneer by many in the industry, and he has utilized several "non-traditional" approaches in the healthcare recruiting world.

On area THC has excelled in is content marketing.  Utilizing a wide range of technologies, THC is continually generating on-line content to help both potential clients realize the unique nature of THC's recruiting model and to provide potential candidates with a plethora of information on opportunities that are available.

Physicians, Hospital CEOs/CFOs and other medical facility decision makers now use the internet to search for medical content, news and opportunities.  Several surveys that we have seen indicate over 80% (and climbing each year) of physicians and other healthcare personnel use the internet to search for on-line medical content.

Content channels:

The Hire Connection utilizes a wide range of channels to help develop on-line content.

YouTube - THC's YouTube channels create video content monthly

Blog - THC's Blog posts weekly on opportunities, industry news, company news and other on-line content

Other Social Media channels - THC posts new content daily

Achieving a positive, robust and highly influential reputation online is the result of a carefully executed strategy. THC's owned media that we create — the web copy, blog posts, videos, and other helpful resources, will hopefully lead the way to shared media — the online reviews, complimentary tweets and other consumer-generated praise.

The Hire Connection - Better results, Better Approach

Though relatively young, The Hire Connection (THC) is well known for matching qualified candidates with employers and providers. In fact, THC founder Van Allen, with over 20 years in healthcare recruiting is considered a pioneer by many in the industry.

Better Results

Under Allen’s leadership, THC’s unique approach to recruiting, which fully utilizes technology for better results, more efficiently helps candidates and facilities realize their goals. Personally, we think every recruiting firm should work this way; but then again, we’re kind of glad they don’t.

But perhaps you’re wondering, “How do I know what firm to select or which recruiter to work with as I begin my journey”. When making such an important decision, we suggest you start with these three considerations:

1. Have They Visited

Always ask the recruiter if they have personally visited the location they are sharing with you. If the answer is no, they are probably representing a Contingent firm that hasn’t done all their homework. This is not to say Contingent firms misrepresent opportunities. They do their best, but their services are limited, and without a site visit they are not sufficiently informed. As a result, you’re left with an incomplete overview of the community and opportunity, and a whole lot of questions.

At THC we get to know our Opportunities firsthand and develop working relationships so we can confidently represent them in detail. This eliminates some of the potential train wrecks during the interview process.

2. How do They Select

Ask the recruiter how they conduct their selection process in terms of what opportunities they represent. If they present every opportunity that comes down the pike, rather than ones that meet your criteria, they may be wasting your time.

At THC we carefully hand-pick our opportunities and make sure they initially meet our rigid 3-pronged criteria: First, they must provide a competitive compensation and benefits package with tremendous upside potential. Secondly, we check out their leadership team: Is it forward thinking enough to survive in this fast moving ever-changing healthcare world? Finally, we make sure each opportunity provides an environment conducive to a candidate’s practice preferences, and additionally allows room for professional and personal growth.

3. What Are the Politics Like

Ask your recruiter what they know about the opportunity politics. Though turf wars and strained relationships are common, nobody wants to walk into a war zone unprepared.

At THC, we research all aspects of every opportunity to make sure no candidate enters a position littered with land mines.

Incidentally, these are just three of the considerations we sift through before officially partnering with an employer.

We Take Great Pride

At THC, because our team takes great pride in providing every candidate with an amazing placement experience from start to finish, we work exceptionally hard to get the best results. Hopefully, our efforts today will cause you to think of The Hire Connection first in the future.

The healthcare recruiting industry has two traditional approaches to the way recruiting companies will use for placement of healthcare professionals.  Let's take a quick look at each approach and then The Hire Connection approach!

Traditional Contingent Approach

The contingent approach is sometimes considered a value, because no payment is required until when or IF, a candidate is placed.  Contingent agencies offer limited client services and sourcing ability, which can prolong recruitment efforts and have a negative impact on the quality of your outcome.

Contingent agencies represent the candidate...not you or your company!  How much incentive do you think they have to make a placement at  your facility versus others?

Traditional Retained Approach

The retained approach offers a comprehensive recruitment strategy that designates staff, resources and services to your search.

Retained agencies are expensive, difficult to budget...and if the search goes unfilled, the client loses EVERYTHING they have invested in the search.  There also may be additional advertising charges and the average financial risk if the search goes unfilled is $28,000.

The Hire Connection Approach!

The Hire Connection was founded to provide a comprehensive recruitment solution that is financially safe and affordable.

We implement a full-service recruitment strategy with a unique money back guarantee to substantially mitigate your financial risk.  Coupling technology, expertise and accountability, The Hire Connection services are designed to source, screen, qualify, present and place providers to satisfy recruitment goals and provider retention.

Safe and affordable, our schedule fee is easy to budget and all advertising is included in total recruitment costs.  We also charge far less than other agencies in it's class, and our completion fee is contingent on successful placement!

Don't go the traditional approach route...The Hire Connection approach works!

The Hire Connection offers its clients the industry's most comprehensive range of healthcare recruitment services.

Coupling technology, expertise and accountability, The Hire Connection services are designed to source, screen, qualify, present and place the RIGHT providers to satisfy recruitment goals and improve provider retention. Give us a call today!

11 ways physicians can improve patient satisfaction

At The Hire Connection, we are continually looking at various aspects of the health care industry to learn as much about the environment as we can.  As the physician shortage continues to grow, patient satisfaction is in decline.  We've found several articles that have some great ideas for both physicians and medical facilities.  Here is a compilation of the best (in our opinion) 11 ideas to achieve better patient satisfaction:

Family Practice/Private Practice:

1. Manage your front staff.

Your front staff has a direct correlation on patient satisfaction.  If they are not doing a good job managing greeting patients when they arrive, are not keeping up on administrative tasks, and dealing with rude, angry, or otherwise difficult patients, you have a problem.  One technique to use as a physician is to contact the office as a "new patient" and see how your experience is.

2. Make your billing practices transparent

Patients never like surprises, so work to determine quickly whether they are insured and the carrier is accepted by the practice.  Clearly have in writing your policy for billing uncovered costs, how you treat unpaid balances, and consider a policy disclosure that the patient signs and understands.  You will have a better chance of getting paid also!

3. Spruce up your waiting room

Take a good look at your waiting room and make sure it's a great place for your patients.  Are your magazines up to day?  Do you offer free Wi-Fi?  Do you have a HD TV set with closed captioning tuned to the news and muted?  Are you playing relaxing background music?  How about some plants and nice wall art?  If the patient is relaxed, then they are probably satisfied.

4. Are you on time and do you say I'm sorry when you are late?

Your patients time may be as valuable as yours, so don't make them wait if possible.  Nothing can be more frustrating than waiting 45 minutes for an appointment or sitting in an exam room with nothing but a thin gown on.  Never hide the fact that you are running behind and have a staff member give an update on your schedule every 15 minutes.  Shy away from the overbooking appointments to compensate for no shows.  Your patients will appreciate it.

5. Have your staff knock on the exam room door before entering

No matter how short your time is, barging into an exam room may make some patients uncomfortable.    Knocking and waiting a few seconds is very courteous and patients will appreciate the effort to respect their privacy.

6. Follow-up with your patients

Patients may have anxiety about their visit or pending test results.  By follow-up with the patient and reporting results in a timely many will show you did not forget about them the minute they left the office.

Medical Facilities and Hospitals:

7. Spend time with your patients

The main thing that most patients want when in a hospital is time with their doctors and nurses.  This is becoming more of a challenge every day and information technology (lack of it, or slowness) is biting a bigger chunk of a physicians time than ever.  Swing your pendulum back to direct patient care, and you will have happier patients!

8. Work on lowering the noise

A very common complaint from patient's with longer hospital stays is the lack of a good night's sleep. Sleep is critical to the healing process, and having a noisy roommate, noisy staff, and repeated wake ups during the night will lead to disgruntled patients.

9. Improve the menu

If the food is bad, so is the patient's mood.  It does not have to be gourmet, but with a little effort, hospital staff can serve food that they could eat and enjoy themselves.

10. Be upfront about wait times

This may be hard to accomplish, but giving the patient and their families an accurate wait time for a CT scan for example, can make the patient much happier.  They will know when to eat or not and family stress will be lower.

11. SMILE!

There is nothing better to relieve a patient's anxiety and increase satisfaction than a smile...this is true for all medical facility settings and having the patient see you smile, will probably make them do the same.

Community Hospitals - Challenges are ahead

The Hire Connection often works with community hospitals to fill their physician needs.  We are constantly surveying the recruiting landscape to stay abreast of challenges that health care facilities are facing now and in the future.  We came across an interesting article from Becker's Hospital Review that highlights some upcoming challenges for our community hospitals and some immediate actions for future success.

This article makes the point that with the Supreme Court's decision to not overturn the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act (Obamacare), hospitals are now freed up to move quickly to prepare for new payment and delivery models.  The issue however, is that smaller community hospitals do not have the existing infrastructure to transform their organization quickly.  Here is a recap of the challenges that these hospitals face:

1.  Community hospitals have a challenge with their revenue cycle

With Medicare reimbursement levels on the decline, community hospitals serve a higher level of Medicare and Medicaid patients. These hospitals may suffer more that hospitals with a privately insured patient load. Another good point made is that the smaller, community based hospitals often don't have the same clout as larger hospitals, and this negatively effects their ability to negotiate the best rates from managed care providers.

2.  Community hospitals have a challenge with access to capital

Because of the revenue challenges and the reduced reimbursement issue, the lack of access to capital can reduce the community hospital from updating their facilities or adding additional physicians and services. This can affect patient volume and the quality of care as their facilities age.

3.  Community hospitals have a challenge with physician recruitment

There is an overall physician shortage, and community hospitals are challenged with attracting the necessary mix of primary care physicians and specialists to locations where the hospital is in a rural area.

4.  Community hospitals have a challenge with hospital-physician alignment

Community hospitals, like all hospitals, also struggle to work cooperatively with their medical staff to improve quality and lower costs.

The article then presents 6 immediate actions community hospitals can take to tackle these challenges:

6 Immediate actions:

  1. Optimize internal operations  Before looking externally for support, community hospitals should assess their internal operations and optimize efficiency.
  2. Benchmark performance  Community hospitals can improve efficiency and increase savings by bench-marking performance against similar hospitals. Comparing clinical data can help hospitals identify opportunities for improvement and spur change
  3. Assess feasibility of independence  After a community hospital makes as many internal improvements as possible, it should assess the feasibility of remaining independent. The ability of a community hospital to remain independent depends on many factors, such as the size of the patient population and competition in the area.
  4. Consider forming new relationships  If internal improvements are not sufficient to compete in the marketplace, community hospitals should consider forming relationships with other organizations to help meet the demands of high quality and low cost.
  5. Ensure board involvement  The future success of community hospitals also depends on the involvement of their board of directors and/or trustees. In fact, the board's engagement with the hospital administration and medical staff may be a determining factor in the hospital's ability to survive healthcare reform.
  6. Collaborate with physicians  Community hospital leaders need to commit to a collaborative relationship with physicians to improve quality and cost efficiency. One way Great Plains Regional Medical Center builds a positive relationship between hospital executives and physicians is by including physicians in leadership positions. The hospital's bylaws require the board to include two physicians elected by the medical staff as well as the chief of staff and vice chief of staff, who are both physicians. Currently, physicians account for roughly one-third of the hospital's board. Involving physicians in the hospital's governance ensures they have a voice in the hospital's strategic decisions.
