5 Important Questions To Ask When Interviewing Physicians

Quality physicians are the lifeblood of many communities. Residents rely on their healthcare professionals to keep themselves and their families in good health; without quality care providers, the overall health (and consequently, the morale) of a community can drop significantly. If you are the CEO of a hospital in a small or rural community, it is imperative that you find quality physicians for your facility. Our medical recruiting firm is here to help in anyway we can. This week, we're dedicating our blog to some of the important questions you should ask when interviewing prospective physicians.

1. What Brought You Into Medicine?
Asking this question can help you learn about your candidate's motives and values. Although most people know that doctors tend to be well-paid, you will probably want to avoid hiring physicians who say they went into medicine specifically for the earning potential. A healthcare professional who found his calling through a desire to help people may be a much better choice.

2. What Interests You About This Position?
This question is a good one to ask after talking about what brought them into medicine. As with the first question, it provides a glimpse into what motivates your applicants. Do they talk about the local area and how it will benefit their family? Do they talk about the salary and benefits package you advertised? The local cost of living? Ideally, this question should provide you with some insight on your applicants' personality, motives, and lifestyle.

3. What Advantages Could You Bring To Our Practice?
Asking this question offers two distinct advantages of its own. First, it gives your candidates a chance to provide their perspective on their unique talents and how you may be able to benefit from them. Second, it gives you a chance to identify applicants who may be a bit conceited and boastful. If you want to avoid hiring these types of people, this question may help you weed them out.

4. Do You Have Any Experience With A Practice Similar To Ours?
As you are probably well aware, healthcare facilities' culture and overall dynamics vary greatly depending on their size and whether they are a public or private practice. While we certainly don't mean to say that physicians who have only worked in large public facilities would not be a good fit for a small private practice, it can be helpful to understand what your candidates' background experience is.

5. Who Are Your Favorite Patients To Treat?
What makes your applicants' eyes light up? While they may have experience treating many different kinds of patients, there will probably be one particular specialty they prefer. By encouraging them to talk about their favorite arenas, you allow them to let their guard down a little by giving them the chance to showcase their true personalities.

Good Luck On Your Interviews!
These five questions are especially important to ask during an interview, but they certainly shouldn't be the extent of your questions. Here are a few other basic questions you should also include on your list:
  • Why are you looking for a new position?
  • Is there something in particular that attracted you to our area?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • How do you handle yourself under pressure?
  • Why do you think I should hire you?

Honoring Emergency Medical Services Week 2016

Can you remember a time when emergency medical service providers were relatively uncommon? Believe it or not, emergency medical service was not widely available in the United States until the late 1960s / early 1970s. In recognition of the critical role these providers would play in our society, President Gerald Ford instituted Emergency Medical Services Week in 1974. Originally observed in September, this week provided a special opportunity for unique programs designed to recognize and honor the brave men and women who offer their services as emergency medical service providers.

Observing Emergency Medical Services Week

Forty-two years later, Emergency Medical Services Week is still an integral part of the medical field and culture. By providing immediate medical attention both at the scene of an emergency and en route to the hospital, emergency service providers save lives on a daily basis as they respond to a wide variety of health emergencies, including cardiac arrest, difficulty breathing, drug overdose, stroke, drowning, car accidents, and more.

In 1992, the observance for Emergency Medical Services week was moved to the third week of May. This year, the observances are currently underway; Emergency Medical Services Week 2016 is from May 15th - 21st. On behalf of everyone at our physician recruiting firm, we would like to officially extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women who respond to emergency calls on a daily basis.

Statistics About Emergency Medical Service Providers

We are doing our part to raise awareness of the integral role our EMS providers play by taking this opportunity to share with you some of the interseting statistics we have found regarding emergency medical services in the United States. Keep reading to learn more about how important these individuals are to our culture.

These statistics taken from NAEMT.org:
  • There are 15,276 ambulance services in the U.S.
  • There are 840,669 EMS personnel in the U.S.
  • The 1,001-10,000 service calls per week range makes up for 47% of all call volume ranges.

These statistics taken from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:
  • The median pay for EMTs and paramedics is $15.38 per hour.
  • EMTs and paramedics are required to complete a postsecondary education program in order to be eligible to work in the field, but they are not typically required to have work experience in a related occupation.

We were unable to find recent statistics on how many service calls EMTs take every year; however, in 2009, there were an estimated 36,698,670 emergency responses (source: JEMS).

Considering the vital role emergency service technicians play in our society, ensuring that you have top-quality individuals on your emergency medical staff is absolutely essential. If you are looking for new and improved ways to recruit emergency medical service providers for your team, contact our experienced physician recruiting firm. 4 Winning Strategies To Enhance Your Company Culture

A successful company starts with a successful culture. In order to run a truly successful healthcare facility, you have to build a strong company culture among your physicians, nurses, and other hospital staff. Your team members will perform better (which equates to satisfied patients who return for more services) and be more likely to stay with your company longer (which equates to reduced recruiting and training costs). As an experienced medical recruiting firm, we understand the immense importance of a strong corporate culture and we strive to do everything we can to help you build one. Here are a few of our tried and true tips for improving the culture within your institution.

1. Show Each Employee How Their Role Fits Into The "Big Picture"
The workforce is continuously evolving, and the most important priorities for employees change with the decades. Many of today's workers are not content simply clocking in and clocking out - they want to understand how their roles impact the company as a whole. Demonstrating to each team member how their position affects the big picture may help boost morale - and, in turn, the organization's culture.

2. Make Upper-Level Management Accessible
Today's employees want to know that they matter to their managers and bosses. According to Healthcare Finance, the accessible presence of hospital CEOs and other leadership roles helps employees feel that the company's leaders have their team's best interests in mind. The days of delivering orders from behind a desk are long gone; hospitals that institute a two-way dialogue between employees and upper management typically rate much higher in employee satisfaction surveys.

3. Provide Feedback Regularly
Providing consistent feedback is becoming more and more important to today's employees - especially among the millennial generation (those born from around the early 1980s to the late 1990s). You don't have to hold a formal performance evaluation to provide feedback - though these are important and should be held at least once a year. However, a simple "good job on that procedure," or "your patient spoke very highly of your care," will go a long way.

4. Institute Peer Interviews
Hiring the right people is a critical step in the retention process. If you hire someone who is not fit for their role or your company, you will soon have to deal with the entire process of recruiting and training a new individual all over again. When our healthcare recruiting experts source candidates for our clients, we conduct an in-depth screening process to ensure that you interview only the applicants with the highest potential. We recommend taking this one step further by asking some of your top-performing staff to sit in on one of the final interviews with the applicant. Your team members are familiar with the day-to-day demands their positions require and may be more equipped to determine whether or not an applicant will be a good fit for the position.

The Hire Connection Can Help You Find GREAT Team Members
Finding high-quality physicians, nurses, and medical staff is the first step towards creating a winning company culture that retains employees who provide top-level care to your patients. Our physician recruitment experts are experienced individuals who undergo rigorous training to prepare them for the high demands of the recruitment field. Overcoming The VA's Recruitment Challenges

The Veterans Administration fills one of the most valuable and honorable roles within our society: providing affordable healthcare to the brave men and women who have served our country. Despite their integral role in our culture, however, many VA hospitals face significant challenges recruiting quality physicians and nursing staff to provide the care that today's veterans so desperately need.

With over twenty years of medical recruiting experience, Van Allen and The Hire Connection team are here to help VA hospitals overcome the unique challenges they face. Keep reading to learn more about how our physician recruiting firm can help the Veterans Administration overcome their recruitment challenges.

CHALLENGE: Limited Budget
VA hospitals offer a valuable resource to veterans in that they offer much-needed care at a much more affordable rate than other hospitals. However, this lower rate means that they have less money to pay their providers - a drawback that can seriously hurt their recruitment efforts.

SOLUTION: Other Recruitment Incentives
Fortunately, an impressive salary is not the only advantage that can be used to attract quality physicians. VA hospitals tend to have success recruiting when they advertise the desirable incentives they can offer their staff, such as a flexible workweek, extra vacation time, insurance, and student debt relief.

CHALLENGE: Recruiters Who Work 9-5
Most of the internal recruiting staff at VA hospitals work standard 9-5 or 8-4:30 jobs. They come into work in the mornings and spend eight hours trying to attract physicians. After they go home in the evening, they won't give much thought to recruitment until they come back into work the next morning. Unfortunately, it takes more than 40 hours a week to find quality physicians.

SOLUTION: Hire An External Medical Recruiting Firm
As an independent physician recruiting firm, we aren't confined to the standard hours held by most in-house recruiting staff. Since most physicians search for new positions while still holding down their current jobs, they need to be able to talk to recruiters during irregular hours when they are not at work. Our team is available around the clock to recruit interested candidates.

CHALLENGE: Inexperienced In-House Recruiters
Physician recruitment is not an easy task. You shouldn't hire new recruiters, train them for a few weeks, and then expect them to successfully attract the nation's best available physicians and nurses. There is a large learning curve and a lot of moving parts related to the art of recruiting. There are several different strategies and tactics that can lead to success, but these must be learned over time. Expecting quick results will only lead to failure.

SOLUTION: Experienced Third-Party Recruiters
It takes a lot of dedication and an enormous amount of time to become good at recruiting. When we hire young recruiters, we are committed to training them for a year before they can be expected to be effective. By hiring a third-party recruiting firm, you can let someone else shoulder the responsibility of training recruiters so you can get straight to enjoying the benefits.

Contact The Hire Connection To Overcome Your Recruitment Challenges!
If you are feeling the strain of recruiting physicians for your hospital, it's time to consider reaching out to a professional medical recruiting company. With an extremely talented and dedicated staff, The Hire Connection has all the resources you need to recruit the best physicians the current job market has to offer.
