How to Design the Perfect Compensation Package

You have to have a steady stream of new and returning patients in order for your facility to succeed, and in order to that, you have to have skilled, dedicated physicians. How do you find these outstanding doctors for your healthcare facility? You have to set your hospital apart as an outstanding place to work. Not surprisingly, one of the easiest ways to do this is to offer an unbeatable compensation package that physicians won't be able to find anywhere else. This week, the team at our professional medical recruiting company is here to help you design the perfect compensation package.

Base Pay

When establishing a compensation package, base pay is often the best place to start. Before anything else, you need to decide how much your physician's annual salary should be. This number will vary depending on his or her specialty. Here is a quick look at some current average salaries from Medscape:
  • Family Medicine - $195,000
  • Internal Medicine - $196,000
  • Neurology - $229,000
  • Pulmonary Medicine - $296,000
  • Oncology - $302,000
  • Emergency Medicine - $306,000
  • Radiology - $351,000

Financial Benefits

Once you have determined what the base pay should be, you can begin to consider the additional financial benefits you want to offer your new physician. Examples of some of these types of benefits can include:
  • Signing Bonus
  • Quarterly Bonuses
  • Holiday Bonuses
  • Company Match 401(k) Plan
  • Health Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Student Loan Relief
  • Help With Moving Costs

Lifestyles Benefits

While money is certainly a major factor for anyone looking for openings in a healthcare facility, it's important to remember that quality of life will also be a big concern. You can set your opportunity apart by offering various incentives that won't cost you any extra money, such as:
  • Limited or Light Call Schedule
  • No Overtime

Value-Based Payments: What Will The Switch Mean For Your Hospital?

The regulations surrounding America's healthcare system are changing - again. Running a successful hospital in the United States requires constantly adapting to the ever-changing policies, and staying on top of everything can be a challenge. The Hire Connection, LLC aims to make things easier on our clients by providing professional medical recruiting services and valuable information about the changing medical scene. This week, we're here to examine one of the major upcoming shifts: the switch to value-based payments.

Value-Based Payments vs Fee-For-Service
Traditionally, doctors and hospitals billed their patients according to a standard fee-for-service structure. According to this method, doctors were able to charge their patients for services any rendered, such as the tests they ordered and the number of visits they had with each patient. The actual benefits each patient received were not factored into the charges for the services rendered.

Under the value-based payment structure, on the other hand, doctors are compensated based on the quality of care they actually deliver to their patients. Instead of billing for the number of visits, physicians can only bill their patients in proportion to the benefits the patients get from the care they received. (Keep in mind, of course, this is a very general summation of the process.)

What Will The Switch Mean For Your Hospital?
This is an interesting switch for the healthcare industry, because (unlike many other major shifts) hospitals are not specifically required to switch to value-based payment methods. However, more and more hospitals are making the transition, and patients (for the most part) are very enthusiastic about this new payment structure. While his patients' well-being should be every doctor's primary concern, many individuals are concerned that this is not always the case. These patients believe that since the value-based payment methods mean that doctors are only paid for the quality of care they deliver, they will be more focused on taking great care of their patients.

Because of this overwhelming patient support, many independent physicians who tried to adhere to the fee-for-service structure are losing their clientele base and being forced to instead join large hospitals and healthcare systems. Consequently, major hospitals are experiencing growing pains in addition to the general challenges associated with adjusting to a new payment structure.

THC Can Help With This Transition!
In order for your hospital to successfully survive the switch over to value-based payment methods, you will need to find and recruit top-quality physicians who will be genuinely dedicated to your patients' success. As the best medical recruiting company in the U.S., The Hire Connection has the experience you need to find these candidates! Contact us when you are ready to get started.

7 Professional Recruiting Tips

Recruiting new physicians to join your staff is no small task. As we mentioned earlier this week, experts estimate that between recruitment and training expenses, hiring a new physician for your practice can cost anywhere from $30,000-$200,000. With so many dollars involved, it is crucial that you make sure you are attracting the right candidates! The Hire Connection is here to help with these tried-and-true professional recruiting tips.

Professional Recruiting Tips

1. Get Your Current Team Involved.
Interviewing potential candidates can be time-consuming. You can save yourself a great deal of time and energy by screening potential candidates and only interviewing those with legitimate hiring potential. No one knows your facility's value and culture like your current physicians and other staff members, so let them use their knowledge to help you. Ask your team if they know anyone who might be a good fit for your facility and would be interested in looking for a new opportunity, and interview those candidates first.

2. Recruit The Spouses, Too.
Our spouses have a huge impact on our major life decisions, and your candidates are no exception. If a candidate's spouse is majorly supportive of your offer, he/she will be much more likely to consider your position. In the same vein, a candidate will be less likely to consider your offer if his/her spouse is unsupportive. By dedicating some of your recruitment efforts to the spouses and the families, you will likely see much better results.

3. Offer Enticing Signing Bonuses.
The physician shortage is already upon us, and experts estimate that it is only going to get worse over the next decade. With so many open positions and so (relatively) few physicians, recruiters are having to work extra hard to attract the best candidates for their opportunities. Offering a generous signing bonus is a great way to make your opportunity stand out from your competition.

4. Design A Generous Compensation Package.
With so many different positions to choose from, physicians today can be extra choosy about which offers they accept. If you want to attract (and retain) high-quality physicians, you have to have a generous compensation package. Even if you need to keep their annual salary in line with your competitors would offer, you can still make your compensation package stand out by offering great benefits, such as flexible work weeks, holiday bonuses, extended vacation time, and/or a great call schedule.

5. Advertise Your Opportunity Everywhere.
If you want to attract a large pool of candidates to choose from, you have to first get word about your opportunity out to a large pool of job-seekers. At our medical recruiting company, we use all forms of communication to market our clients' opportunities, including print advertising, email, text messages, voice calls, social media, websites, and more. By incorporating multiple methods into your advertising strategy, you will be able to reach a wider demographic.

6. Check Your Candidates' References.
This tip might fade more into the actual hiring process than the initial recruiting process, but its importance cannot be overstated. During the interview process, you only have a set amount of time to get to know your potential candidates. What you do (or do not) learn about them during that time can impact your healthcare facility for months or years to come, so it's important to make the most out of interviewing time you have. Your candidates' references can offer valuable information about the caliber of people and physicians they are.

7. Be Flexible On Your Start Date.
Physicians looking for new opportunities face any number of unique challenges. If they are married, for example, they will have to move their families and get everyone settled into the new city before they start working for your hospital. As a result, they may have limited flexibility on their available start dates. You don't want to risk losing the right physician for your opportunity simply because you were unwilling to compromise on your start date.

Overwhelmed? You Don't Have To Do This On Your Own!

Recruiting physicians can be a challenge, and many in-house recruiters get overwhelmed by the challenges facing them. If you think you would like help with your medical recruiting efforts or would simply like more information about how an professional medical recruiting company can help you, contact The Hire Connection. Our team of experienced medical recruiting experts would be happy to help you!
